122nd Cadian Fluff

There is not much on the internet about the 122nd Cadian regiment but I found some interesting bits of fluff for the army that help with the overall modelling and painting.

From Warhammer 40k Wiki:
"The 122nd Cadian is an Imperial Guard unit from Cadia. They distinguished themselves in the Vogen Campaign against the Night Lords traitor legion, rebel cultists and the Planetary Defence Force. Among their officers were Veteran Segeant Hessel, and Captain Fane who was killed in action during the campaign against the Night Lords."

Dictator from Warseer states the following:
"The 122nd cadian was originally the 101st cadian. But after near destruction in the battle for Vogen it reformed its tattered remains into the 122nd. To represent this destruction of and reformation I will make the models seem very battle worn and almost gritty. And of course, the scheme chosen is urban looking because of the regiments past as urban combat specialists."
I don't know where he found this info but it sounds pretty good to me! Suits very well my decision to paint the vehicles with an urban camo and weather them very heavily.

From Lexicanum:
  • circa M40 - Winter Campaign on Vintock III
  • circa M41 - the regiment participated in the Defence of the Imperial City of Vogen. Elements of the regiment under the command of Captain Fane faced renegade chaos space marines. At one point the Keystone of the position was mis-deployed when the Night Lord sorcerer, Asuramandos used warp majics to re-direct the defenders. The position was overrun in the ensuing battle.
  • During the Defence of Vogen City at least one Leman Russ Executioner fought as the fourth tank of second squadron of the second company.
Which is good news as well. We know that they participated on a winter campaing inside a city. So the snowy bases and urban camo fits well with the fluff.
Overally there is not much info I could find but these little bits and pieces I did manage to discover were very useful.

Manticore Rocket Launcher, Heavy Flamer 160 Pts

This sort of list seems to be working for people, from all the posts I've read on the Internet. Since I am not too good making lists from scratch of my own I decided to go with something like that. I went for redundancy rather than spamming. So I opted to take several units that fulfill the same role rather than taking the same unit several times. This makes the painting much more interesting for me and offers more tactical maneuvering in the battlefield.
Since people have been playing heavily mechanised armies in 5th edition I new I needed to concentrate on anti-tank weapons. The company command squad and the veterans are loaded with meltaguns to take out AV 14 stuff like Land Raiders. Their BS 4 along with the "Bringing it Down!" order (making weapons vs vehicles twin linked) should do the trick I suppose. Then we have the 3 twin linked lascannons from the vendetta which will be able to kill AV 13 fairly easy. Then I got a ton of weapons to deal with lightly armoured vehicles (AV 10 and 11). All the multilasers from the chimeras, hydras and the autocannons from the infantry squads are more than enough.
Bane wolf, heavy flamers on chimers and the platoon command squad with the 4 flames will help clearing out any horde armies (if anyone is playing with one these days). Then all my heavy ordnance stuff (Medusas, Manticore, Battle Psyckers) can fulfill a dual role, being equally good at destroying enemy armour as well as clearing massive chunks of infantry.
I read about a nasty trick of how to protect your artillery units. Usually I will have them hanging of the back, away from harms way. My biggest concern is stuff deepstriking close to them and taking them out in a round of shooting (drop pods containing metlagun wielding space marines for example). People have been using the following trick in order to counter that. Using an Inquisitor hanging back with the artillery inside a Vendetta you are sure to prevent deepstriking near that area. By having 2 Mystics with him, the Inquisitor can make on of your units (within 12'') to shoot at anyone that deepstrikes 4D6'' from him. And since the Vendetta gives him a very big footprint, that area becomes quite massive. So if a drop pod deep strikes anywhere near your artillery it will be greeted with 2 Medusa Ordnance shots. Or if a multi melta equipped Land Speeder dares to deepstrike close enough if will get all the shots from the Hydras. Very nasty trick indeed. I also included officer of the fleet (-1 to enemy reserve rolls) so my opponent will think twice before holding stuff in reserves in order to deepstrike them later in the game.
One last thing. Getting the 1st turn with this list is quite important so I equipped the inquisitor with an Emperor's tarot. Everything sounds good in theory so far I just need to get some practise games now!

Infantry Squad 311 Chimera

So this is the first vehicle I have painted for the army. It's a chimera (with multilaser and hull heavy flamer) that will serve as the transport of the 1st infantry squad of the 3rd platoon. Thus the vehicle marking 311, but I will explain how these vehicle markings work in another post.
It was the first time I used all those weathering techniques and it was all quite new to me. I watched those 2 DVD's from MIG productions and they were very useful but I never got my hands full on a project like this. Lots of time it was guess work (especially with the oil paints) but in the end it seems to work. I am starting to get the whole process down and I'll describe in detail what I do when I am 100% sure (since I will be following the same steps for every vehicle).
I was criticized for using too much mud on the vehicle so I will try to tone down the effect next time.

122nd Cadia colour scheme

Imperial Guard was the second army I picked up for 40k. Back then (6-7 years ago) I wanted to make a horde army with loads of infantry men and heavy weapon teams. The IG vehicles weren't too appealing at the time. Since my 1500 lists included around 100 models
I decided I needed a quick way to paint them. So I needed a colours that were easy to paint on. Since I undercoat with black primer, this would be one of the colour. I guessed grey would be another colour easy to paint on and it would make a nice urban uniform.
To be honest I regret that decicion nowdays. I would prefer some brighter and more natural looking colours (greens and browns) but it's too late now and there is no use pondering the past.
I did some "research" recentrly and discovered that my colour scheme would fit nicely to the Cadian 122nd Regiment (I forgot to mention that I used Cadian models this far).

Ok my models didn't have the camo scheme on the fatigues but nevertheless it was pretty close.
Also I liked the colours on the vehicles.

I was sold for Cadia 122nd then!

Why this blog?

The main reason for this blog is to document, catalog and serve as a memoir of my Imperial Guard project. I want to be able to remember what techniques I use to paint certain stuff or to record my plans for the future since my memory is not that good. Also it would serve good for a nostalgia trip. Not sure how often I will update it or how much I will use it since I am lazy by nature but I guess I'll try to do my best.
